Rhode Island’s Commercial Fishing Industry is a big economic multiplier for the Ocean State. When Fred Mattera of the Commercial Fisheries Center Rhode Island heard from fish captains who increasingly needed help recruiting crews, he turned to Building Futures for support in building a new commercial fisher registered apprenticeship program for the Ocean State.
“When I got out of high school I was looking for a trade where I could start making money right away…The first time I went out, I was expecting the worst. But once I got out there, I was loving it…I knew right then and there I was made for this.”
